PSYCHOLOGY &

counselling

Joanna has extensive experience with people with mental health issues including anxiety, depression and personality disorders, PTSD, drug and alcohol and relationship difficulties in her 11 years working in both inpatient mental health facilities and community settings. Joanna works with each person to find the right combination of psychological strategies to reduce symptoms and distress, improve daily functioning and relationships. Psychological strategies include:

  • Dialectic behavioural therapy (DBT)
  • Interpersonal therapy
  • Trauma focused therapy
  • Motivational therapy
  • Narrative therapy
  • Mindfulness
  • Relaxation strategies

 

Complex trauma counselling is an area Joanna specialises in for adult survivors of child abuse, relationship abuse and family violence as a registered counsellor with the National Centre of Complex Trauma (Blue Knot Foundation) and NSW Victims Services. Addressing domestic abuse, coercive control and family violence also areas of Joanna’s expertise with over 20 years working in the crisis, courts and services sector and is an accredited Family Violence and Mental Health Social Worker registered with the AASW. Joanna works in collaboration with clients, family law professionals and DV services to support people experiencing abuse and violence in their relationship or separating from an abusive relationship.

Joanna is a trained and experienced supervisor for health workers, graduates and students in the human services field in collaboration with Griffith University, Southern Cross University and human services organisations to support students and professionals in their education and professional development goals. Joanna is an assessor for the AASW Social Work credentialling in mental health and family violence, and undertaking a PhD at Bond University.

If you have experienced violence as an adult or child when you were in NSW you can apply for counselling. If you would like me as your counsellor you can nominate me in your application to NSW Victim Services, this service will cover the cost if you are eligible. In many cases, you do not have had to reported it to the police, let Victim Services decide if you are eligible.

Your personal information will remain confidential unless legally compelled by a court or criminal justice department as per all health professionals’ obligations. Joanna complies with Australian standards of privacy of information of health records and with standards and ethics of the following organisations:

  • The Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth)
  • Recommendations, guidelines and policies set down by the Australian Information Commissioner

Confidentiality is important and will be protected, information collected will not be shared with other professionals, individuals or organisation unless your written consent is given, or there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others. Serious risk of harm is a reporting obligation as a duty of care for all health professionals. You have the right to access your personal information, reports and documents upon written request to Joanna. Therapy with Joanna is voluntary, you may change your mind or withdraw at any time from support.
